Men’s and Women’s Basketball Helps Out at MSHA Family Day Event
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2011) – The ETSU men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with other athletic department personnel, volunteered their time Saturday morning to help out at the Niswonger Children’s Hospital’s Family Activity Day.
The event, which was held inside the ETSU/Mountain States Health Alliance Athletic Center for the second consecutive year, was sponsored by multiple organizations, including MSHA, Fit Kids, the Kohl’s Kids on the Move program, and ETSU athletics.
“Having our athletic department give back to the community is important because of all the support community members give us,” said Sara Hacker, ETSU Director of Marketing and Corporate Development. “Our basketball teams did a great job showing the children the importance of staying fit and working out. Staying active plays a vital role in a person’s healthy lifestyle, and hopefully the families took away some useful tips during today’s event with Mountain States Health Alliance.”
The Family Activity Day focuses on showing parents and children different ways to spend active time together. Multiple events were made available for participants, including inflatable games, Wii Fit stations, and jump rope activities. The children received a card for a scavenger hunt and when they filled up the card with stamps they received a prize at the end of the station.
In addition, MSHA’s Health Resource Center provided health screenings for blood pressure and body mass index to those that attended.
The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics takes pride in its community service activities and strives for 100 percent participation from its student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the year.
