JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 16, 2011) â€" ETSU men’s basketball head coach Murry Bartow announced Monday that the program has received a national letter of intent from John Walton, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward out of Mitchell High School in Memphis.
Walton, who missed seven weeks this past season with a broken wrist, still averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals per game as a senior. He is expected to provide even more athleticism to the Bucs’ lineup.
“John is a big-time athlete, a great young man and an excellent student,” said Bartow, whose team is coming off a 24-win season and a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. “He can really run and jump, and has a great upside. This is another in-state player, and we continue to recruit and get good players out of the Memphis area.”
Walton reportedly chose the Buccaneers over Arkansas State, South Alabama, Southeast Missouri, Texas Southern and Texas Tech. He becomes the fourth player in the Buccaneers’ 2011-12 recruiting class, joining guards Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) and Marcus DuBose (Hartsville, S.C.), along with swingman Lester Wilson (Knoxville, Tenn.).
