DELAND, Fla. (April 12, 2011) - Having dropped off the pace earlier in the day, the ETSU women's golf team rallied on the back nine at the Victoria Hills Golf Club, inching closer to the top of the team leaderboard following second round play Tuesday afternoon in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships.
The Buccaneers, who currently stand at 603 and are just three strokes back of team leader Campbell, were led by a pair of newcomers that are playing in their first-ever league tournament. Freshmen Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) and Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) posted rounds of 73 and 75, respectively, helping turn ETSU's fortunes around.
On the individual leaderboard, Steinfeldt is currently tied for fourth, three strokes back of Stetson's Alex Buelow, who currently holds the second round lead at 1-over-par 145 (71-74). Meanwhile, Evans is tied for 8th, while ETSU senior Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) is tied for 11th and junior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) sits in 16th place. Vizcarrondo carded a 78 on Tuesday, while Muehl finished the day at 79.
"We were led by our freshmen today and I can't say enough about our rally," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, whose team trailed by as many as 15 strokes heading into the back nine but slashed that deficit significantly. "It is an open tournament for anyone to take tomorrow, and to do that our Bucs need to put forth a strong team effort."
