Career effort at Upstate lands Mitchell first weekly honor
MACON, Ga. (Dec. 7, 2010) - Freshman Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) has exploded onto the basketball scene for the Lady Bucs, and on Tuesday afternoon the Bluffton, Ga. native was recognized for her efforts as she was named Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week.
Mitchell, who ranks first among freshman in rebounding (9.5), and second in scoring (13.5) and field goal percentage (48.6) in the A-Sun, recorded her second career double-double in the Lady Bucs' conference opening 78-70 setback at USC Upstate last Saturday evening. The guard/forward scored a career high 23 points (9-of-20 shooting), pulled down 10 rebounds and forced four steals in 36 minutes of action.
This marks the first-ever weekly award for the criminal justice major, and Mitchell becomes the second ETSU player this season to receive an A-Sun weekly honor. Senior captain Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was named Player of the Week during the first week of the campaign.
Mitchell and the Lady Bucs return to action Wednesday night when ETSU takes on 14th ranked North Carolina. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside Carmichael Arena.
