JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 26, 2010) - The ETSU men's soccer team is set to close out the Atlantic Sun conference slate on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the Bucs head to Spartanburg, S.C. to face USC Upstate at County University Soccer Stadium.
"Our game with USC Upstate has some very important playoff implications," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "We want to be the No.1 Seed and the host in the A-Sun Tournament. If we are able to gain all three points from our trip to USC Upstate, this would place tremendous pressure on Stetson to win both games on the weekend. "
With an ETSU win over the Spartans, the Buccaneers could gain the No.1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament if Stetson were to draw or lose against either UNF or Jacksonville.
The Bucs (11-4-0, 6-2-0 A-Sun) jumped 13 spots in the RPI this week as they are now ranked No. 40 in the country ahead of Michigan, Elon and Charlotte. ETSU also moved up one spot in the NCSAA/HenrickCars.com Regional Rankings after defeating Belmont and Lipscomb on the road last weekend as the Buccaneers are ranked seventh in the South Region. The Bucs are one of only 14 teams in the country with 11 or more wins including No. 1 Akron, No. 3 Maryland, No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 SMU.
"Our ranking of 40 in the RPI represents a measure of both our results and the quality of teams we have played to this point," Calabrese said. "We now have critical matches here at the end of the regular season, and we must be ready to perform to our potential and continue to get results"
ETSU has six players with multiple goals on the season as Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.), Guilherme Reis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Colin Pugh (Dublin, Ireland) and David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) have each netted three goals.
The Bucs lead the all-time series with the Spartans 1-0-1. ETSU picked up its first ever A-Sun win against USC Upstate on the road in 2008 defeating the Spartans 2-1 in overtime.
USC Upstate (1-11-3, 0-8-0 A-Sun) comes into the contest having lost eight straight after dropping contests to Belmont and Lipscomb this past weekend. The Spartans are led by Maurice Beggs as he has posted four goals on the year
