JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2010) - After starting the season out with two wins, including a victory over No. 57 Georgia State, the ETSU women's tennis team moved into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings this week at No. 75.
Head coach Steve Broooks' squad earned victories over defending Ohio Valley Conference Champion Eastern Kentucky January 23, and the nationally ranked Panthers two weeks ago inside the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club.
In their two close road losses at No. 10 Tennessee (4-3) and No. 61 Virginia Tech (5-2), the Lady Bucs played tough against both regional rivals. Against the Lady Vols, ETSU fought back from a 3-0 deficit to pull within one point of a win, while against Virginia Tech the Lady Bucs held an early 2-1 lead before the home-court Hokies rallied for the victory.
"It's very rewarding for the girls to be ranked 75th," said Brooks. "One of our goals this season was to get nationally ranked. Now that we've reached this milestone, hopefully the team can get back to work in practice and achieve even more."
Individually, ETSU senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) continued her assault on the national single standings as the Preseason Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year moved up to 103rd.
Sophomore Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) barely missed out on being ranked as the second-year Lady Buc sits with a perfect 4-0 record this spring, including a win over 37th-ranked Maria Sorbello of Tennessee 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).
"I'm happy to see Yevgeniya back in the rankings," said Brooks. "Going back to the fall she has six or seven wins over ranked girls. Hopefully she can stay unbeaten the rest of the season and receive an automatic NCAA Singles bid. On the other hand I hate to see that Paula isn't ranked yet. She has played outstanding for us this spring. As long as she keeps winning I know she should be ranked sometime this season."
Overall, ETSU sits as the only team in the A-Sun that is nationally ranked, while Stupak is the only ranked individual player in the league.
