Shaw leads Bucs in first round at U.S. Collegiate Championship

        ALPHARETTA, Ga. (April 9, 2007) - Junior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) fired an even par 72 Monday in the first round of the United States Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course, leading the No. 13-ranked ETSU men to a ninth place standing following the first day of play in this highly competitive 15-team field.

 

              The Buccaneers will enter Tuesday's second round just eight strokes off the pace of first round leaders Georgia Tech and Clemson, as the 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets and 12th-ranked Tigers posted first round scores of 292 to finish four strokes ahead of third place and No. 2-ranked Georgia.

Meanwhile, on the individual leaderboard Clemson's Tanner Ervin and Georgia's Chris Kirk ended the day on top with identical rounds of 2-under 70, while a host of players are just one stroke back and tied for third place.

 

            Along with Shaw, ETSU senior and two-time, first-team All-American Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) finished the day at tied for 36th with a 4-over 76, while freshman Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) is tied for 28th at 3-over 75. Other Buc results included a tie for 45th by sophomore Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh, Scotland), while junior Cian McNamara (Limerick, Ireland) ended the day tied for 67th.
