JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 8, 2005) - Former Buccaneer player Andrea Roberts has been named the new head softball coach at East Tennessee State University, announced by the ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics on Friday.
Roberts, who was a member of ETSU's inaugural softball team in 2001, returns to Johnson City after a three-year coaching stint at Bellhaven College, in Jackson, Miss., where she served as an assistant during the 2003 season and moved to the helm of the program for the next two seasons in 2004.
"We welcome Coach Andrea Roberts as the new head coach of Buccaneer softball," said ETSU Associate AD/Senior Woman Administrator Barbie Breedlove. "She brings experience as a player here at ETSU combined with head coaching experience, great knowledge of the game, and energy and enthusiasm to this position."
Roberts began her coaching career as an assistant varsity/head junior varsity coach at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tenn., before moving to the Versitas School in Jackson, Miss., where she started the first fast pitch softball program in school history. Upon moving to Bellhaven, Roberts led the team to a school-record 28 wins in 2004 and proved her recruiting skills by signing 12 student-athletes within three months of taking over the program.

Roberts takes the ETSU reins from former head coach Amy Fuller, who led the Bucs to a 78-96 record over three seasons. Fuller guided the Bucs to a 25-33 overall mark in 2005, including big non-conference wins over
"Our former head coach Amy Fuller laid a great foundation and Coach Roberts will build on that foundation and take us to a championship level," Breedlove said.
"I feel like I couldn't be at ETSU at a more opportune time with the support and the great athletes," Roberts said. "I'm excited to build on the excellent foundation left by Coach Fuller and to be a part of something that is in the process of being great."
