Wednesday, October 22, 2003JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 22, 2003) - Student-athletes from throughout the East Tennessee State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competed Wednesday in the Fatal Vision Goggle Olympics sponsored by the athletic department's Alcohol Awareness Task Force. Student-athletes participated in various competitions including the "Stagger to the finish" Obstacle Course, the "Drunkersize" Stability Balance competition, the "Blitzed Banker" Coin Game, and the "Punt, pass and throw-up" football toss and kick event. "The Fatal Vision Goggle Olympics sponsored by the Alcohol Awareness Task Force was a huge success in drawing attention to the problems caused by underage and irresponsible drinking," said ETSU Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator Barbie Breedlove. "Our focus this semester has been on student-athletes and their awareness of these dangers, but in the second semester we will begin to focus on the general student body, specifically targeting at-risk groups such as fraternities and sororities." The Alcohol Awareness Task Force, which is sponsored by Clyce Distributing Company of Johnson City, is dedicated to increasing awareness among students about the dangers of underage drinking, binge drinking and drunken driving. The week of Oct. 19-26 is Alcohol Awareness Week on campus, and ETSU student-athletes will be doing their part to pass on the message of the dangers of alcohol abuse during this time.
