Friday, October 03, 2003JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (October 3, 2003) - Five members of the East Tennessee State women's soccer team scored goals in the 6-0 win against the Citadel at Liberty Bell Field on Friday night. The Buccaneers (7-2-0 overall, 2-1-0 SoCon) recorded their sixth shutout of the season with the win over the Bulldogs (1-7-1, 0-4-0). "Overall the game was a physical battle. The Citadel comes from a military mentality. They go in hard and clean, and we knew we needed to possess the ball," said head coach Heather Henson. Senior Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) put the Bucs on the board and earned the game winner with a shot at 9:19 from 35 yards outside the goal. Five minutes later, defender Kerri Burke (Raleigh, N.C.) would score her first goal of the game. Freshman Rebecca Murray (Franklin, Tenn.) took a corner kick for ETSU and was able to direct the ball to Burke, who headed it into the net. At 28:58 Citadel goalkeeper Angie Ellenwood attempted to clear the ball, but Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) gained control and knocked it in for a goal. Ashton's goal brought the score 3-0 entering the second half. In the second half Citadel found a surge of energy with six shots, but ETSU was able to regain their focus to net three more goals. "Combinations were effective in the first half," commented Henson. "We didn't possess as well in the start of the second, but we worked back to the combinations in the second half for additional success." Freshman Emily Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.) challenged the Citadel keeper in front of the net for control of the ball. She then passed the ball back to Lauren Kulish (Bowie, Md.), who scored her first goal of the season. Fulcher would then score a goal of her own followed by a second goal by Burke for the 6-0 final. "Kerri Burke had a great night finding the back of the net twice, and Emily Fulcher also had a great night and played a complete game," commented Henson. With their second conference victory, the Buccaneers move on to face the Georgia Southern Eagles in a home contest this Sunday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m. at Liberty Bell Field.
