Sunday, October 19, 2003JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (October 19, 2003) - East Tennessee State freshman Lindsay Hoffman (Frederick, Md.) netted a goal 5:16 into overtime play to claim victory over the Wofford Terriers in women's soccer action at Liberty Bell Field. ETSU improves to 10-3-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the Southern Conference, while Wofford drops to 5-6-3, 3-3-2. The Bucs controlled the first half of the game with eight shots to the Terriers one. Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) would score first for ETSU at 15:29. Ashton beat two players and then slotted the ball past Wofford keeper Austin Somers. Before the first half came to a close, senior Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) scored her seventh goal of the season on a shot to the low right post from 23 yards outside. Brown's unassisted goal came at 25:18. Head coach Heather Henson commented, "In the first half, we possessed the ball and we found the open spaces. Sometimes they were in front of the defense, sometimes behind. We worked the ball around to get it to the back of the net by carrying it into the attacking third and getting the defender to commit." In the second half the Terriers came back to tie the game up with two goals. Abby Anderson netted the ball she received from Bernie Sikes for their first goal. Anderson then went on to assist on Wofford's second goal, notched by Christine Pezzutti from 12 yards outside the goal at the mark of 78:54. Pezzutti's goal sent the game into overtime with a score of 2-2. "Games never end 2-0," said Henson. "We're battling through a long season and we didn't come out to play the second half as much as we could have. We didn't have the clean touches of the ball like we had in the first half." Both teams were more focused in overtime play, but ETSU came out with the game winner. Ashton slotted the ball in at the six-yard line where Hoffman was able to pick up the ball and direct it back post for the goal. "The win came from sweating it out and the desire to put the ball in the back of the net for the overtime win," stated Henson. The Bucs made a total of 15 shots in the game, while the Terriers made seven. This Friday, October 24th the Buccaneers play their final home match of the season against Elon at Liberty Bell Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:00p.m.
