ETSU Track and Field Men and Women Finish Fifth at SoCon Outdoor Championships

BOONE, N.C. (May, 2, 2004) - ETSU wrapped up competition at the Southern Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday evening. Both the men's and women's teams finished in fifth place, the meet was hosted by Appalachian State in Boone N.C. ETSU's highlight of the weekend was junior Nichola Cornish's (Spartanburg, S.C.), who earned an NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark with her performance in the 400m dash preliminaries on Saturday and won the finals of the 400m today with a time of 55.07. In the 100m dash finals junior Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) placed fourth with a mark of 11.97. In the men's sprints, James Rainer (Alcoa, Tenn.) ran well and took third for the Bucs in the 100m with a time of 10.50, while Johnny Tucker (Spartanburg, S.C.) took seventh in the same event. The pair also ran in the 200m finals finishing fifth and seventh respectively. ETSU had three athletes advance to today's 800m finals. Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished second, Jennifer Habbestad (Tampa, Fla.) finished fifth, and Tiffany Collier (Atlanta, Ga.) finished eighth. Christine Ward (Candler, N.C.) ran in the 5000m and finished strong in tenth place. On the men's side, freshman Joshua Hicks (Riceville, Tenn.) finished eighth in the 800m finals. Senior Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) had a strong 1500m race and finished third with a time of 3:56.75. Yewer also ran in the 5000m finishing eighth. In the 400m hurdles finals, senior David Cabbler (Roanoke, Va.) finished second with a time of 53.80. The women's 4x100m relay team took fourth place with a time of 47.56, while the men's 4x100 relay team finished third with a time of 41.61. The ETSU women also competed in the 4x400m relay finishing second with a time of 3:47.93. In the field events, freshman Anna Marie Ricciardi (Canfield, Ohio), who had previously recorded an NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark in the high jump, took second in the high jump today with a mark of 1.72m. Senior Jeremy Snoderly (Knoxville, Tenn.) took sixth in the men's high jump recording a mark of 1.85m. Senior Kristin Truman (Johnson City, Tenn.) took second in the heptathlon. She finished the remaining three events on Sunday. Truman finished third in the long jump with a mark of 5.33m, first in the javelin with a throw of 37.06m, and second in the 800m run with a time of 2:30.88. She then continued her solid performance by competing in the triple jump and recorded a jump of 11.98m for sixth place. The Buccaneers' outdoor season continues as ETSU competes in the Georgia Tech Invite on the weekend of April 15 in Atlanta, Ga.
