Wednesday, June 16, 2004JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 16, 2004) - The Golf Coaches Association of America announced on Wednesday that East Tennessee State University sophomore Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) has been named to the European Squad for the 2004 Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The Palmer Cup, which is in its eighth year, will be played August 6-7 at Ballybunion Golf Club in County Kerry, Ireland. The first six Ryder Cup-style competitions were played between the United States and Great Britain and Ireland, before expanding to include all of Europe last year. A record six European nations will be represented in the 2004 event. Davies, an All-Southern Conference performer who led the Buccaneers with a stroke average of 73.5 and finished second in the SoCon Tournament as a freshman, will represent the United Kingdom. Davies will be joined on the team by Norway's Lars Brovold; Alejandro Cañizares and Gonzalo Castaño of Spain; Rhys Davies of the United Kingdom; Ireland's Gareth Maybin; Francesco Molinari of Italy; Sweden's Alex Norén; and Switzerland's Martin Rominger. Brovold (Alabama), Cañizares (Arizona State), Davies (East Tennessee State), Maybin (South Alabama), Norén (Oklahoma State) and Rominger (South Carolina) compete collegiately in the United States. Davies is the third ETSU player to be named to a Palmer Cup team, joining past greats Keith Nolan and Chris Wisler. In fact, Nolan played in the first Palmer Cup, while Wisler competed in the event twice. "This is a great honor for Rhys and an indication of how talented a player he is," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "It's exciting any time one of our players has a chance to compete on an international stage." The U.S. leads the Palmer Cup presented by Monster Series, 4-2-1.
