Friday, September 20, 2002Johnson City, Tenn. (September 20, 2002) - The East Tennessee State University women's soccer team has nothing to hang their heads about after Friday night's loss to defending Southern Conference Champion UNC Greensboro, 1-0. The Buccaneer defense and keeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.) held the Spartans scoreless throughout the first half. "Jennifer Fields (Mount Airy, Md.) did a great job of winning the center, winning the air balls and finding release options," said ETSU head coach Heather Henson. The lone goal of the night came in the 53rd minute of play as Greensboro's Cara Hammond beat an ETSU defender and scored what would become the game-winning goal. The Buccaneer's had a chance on goal in the final minutes of play as ETSU's Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) rifled a shot that was batted down by Spartan keeper Angie Rudy. Sanden had six saves on the night, as Greensboro out shot the Buccaneers 13-6. "Heather had an exceptional night," said Henson. "This was the best game that we have played so far this year. We played with heart, determination, and tactical awareness." Henson said. ETSU falls to 4-2, 1-1 in conference play. The Buccaneers will take on Southern Conference opponent Davidson, Sunday September 22nd at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex. "Tonight's game shows that we have taken the step to the next level and want to continue improving on Sunday," Henson said.
