Johnson City, Tenn. (August 28, 2002) - Second year head coach Deane Webb and the 2002 East Tennessee State women's volleyball team welcomed members of the local media to Brooks Gym for the Buccaneers' annual "media day." The event is part of the team's preparation for the upcoming season, which begins Friday, Aug. 30 at the Spring Hill Suites Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. Webb is excited about the potential to have ETSU's first back-to-back 20-win season since 1992-93 after finishing with a 20-6 record last year. The Bucs, who finished second in the Southern Conference in 2001, know they will be faced with some challenges in the early part of 2002. ETSU graduated two of its top players from last season, including SoCon Player of the Year Carey Cavanaugh. Replacing such talent is difficult, but Webb has brought in five highly touted recruits from across the United States; those who have extensive experience playing volleyball at highest club team levels. "We are going to be young, but exuberant this year," Webb said. "We have a very good group of players coming in and return a strong group as well. Our goal is to win conference this year." Although the Bucs don't have any seniors on this year's roster, the team is fortunate to have leadership from juniors Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.), Lissa Allen (Palm Bay, Fla.) and Rachel Shifflet (Axton, Va.). East Tennessee State's first home match will be Sept. 3 versus Lincoln Memorial in Brooks Gym. For ticket information call the ETSU ticket office at (423) 439-5371.
