Tuesday, October 29, 2002Johnson City, Tenn. (October 29, 2002) - East Tennessee State's volleyball team lost 3-1 to visiting Appalachian State in Brooks Gym Tuesday night. The Mountaineers won the first game 30-27, before ETSU rebounded with a 30-26 victory in game two. Despite a late rally in game three, ASU regained the advantage with a 30-28 win in the third game and captured the match with a 30-24 victory in game four. "We expected this to be a long, hard-fought match," said Buccaneer head coach Deane Webb, whose squad went the distance and lost at Appalachian State in five games earlier in the season. "Appalachian State just played a little better than we did tonight, especially in the middle." East Tennessee State, which falls to 5-18 overall and 3-11 in the Southern Conference, was led by freshman setter Renee Vesey (Paw Paw, Mich.). Vesey became the first Buccaneer player to record a triple-double this season with 44 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs versus the Mountaineers. Nicole Ryan (Etiwanda, Ca.) tallied 17 kills, while Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.) finished the match with 13 kills. Defensively, Meghan Connolly (Solon, Ohio) led the team with 14 digs to go along with two blocks. Appalachian State was led by Stefanie Panzer and Katherine Dean, who registered 22 and 21 kills, respectively. Panzer's hitting percentage was a remarkable .474, while Dean hit .366 for the match. Starla Gustafson dished out a match-high 57 assists and Alexis Mosley had 16 digs for the Mountaineers, who improve to 12-14 overall (6-8 SoCon). The Bucs return to the road after wrapping up a three-game home stand. They travel to Wofford on Friday, Nov. 1 and then Furman on Saturday, Nov. 2. With only six conference matches remaining, Webb said his team is now in a situation where ETSU must get back on the winning track if it is to make the Southern Conference Tournament. "Tonight wasn't a ‘must-win' situation for us, but the rest of our matches almost need to be if we want to get into the tournament," Webb said. "Our goal is to just take it one game at a time."
