Friday, February 14, 2003ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Feb. 14, 2003) - The East Tennessee State Buccaneer softball team opened their 2003 season by splitting a doubleheader at South Carolina State. ETSU opened the afternoon with an 11-1 victory over the Lady Bulldogs, but SCSU rebounded to take a 13-5 win in game two. Buccaneer junior pitcher Jennifer Fraser (Chattanooga, Tenn.) was dominant in game one, allowing just one hit to the Lady Bulldogs. ETSU put the game away early, scoring five runs in the top of the second. ETSU freshman outfielder Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) led the way for ETSU going 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI. Sophomores Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) and Mary Beth Hazelwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) also had two RBI's in game one while junior Tiffany McVay scored two runs. Fraser pitched a complete game, striking out eight while yielding just one walk and one earned run. Game two would be a different story for the as South Carolina State managed to get nine hits in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs took control of game two early taking a 3-1 lead after the first inning. ETSU would bounce back however, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to tie the contest up, 3-3. An ETSU pitching change in the fourth inning would do no good as the Lady Bulldogs went on to score five runs in the inning to expand their lead to 8-3. After padding their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, the Lady Bulldogs would seal the win on an RBI single by junior second baseman Ardeana Scott to take the 13-5 victory. Freshman pitcher Donisha Johnson (1-0) would pick up the win in game two going six innings and getting three strikeouts. Fraser (1-1) picked up the loss in relief for ETSU. Lane went 2-for-3 in game two, scoring a run and driving in another. Sprague, Hazelwood and junior outfielder Rhea Holler (Peoria, Ariz.) drove in the other Buccaneer runs. East Tennessee State (1-1) will continue on the road as they face Middle Tennessee State on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 2:00 pm in a doubleheader from Murfreesboro, Tenn.
