(April 18, 2003) - Georgia Southern used a five run fourth inning to down East Tennessee State 5-3 in the second game Friday at Kiwanis Park, after the Buccaneers defeated GSU in the first game 4-2. In game one, East Tennessee State (18-21, 4-10) took the early lead in the first inning. Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled up the middle and Jessica Lonsinger (Dale City, Va.) drove her in with a single down the third base line. Georgia Southern (22-19, 6-7) tied the game with a run in the top of the second. Katie Roberts reached first on an infield single. After a walk to Meghan Correia and a double steal, Roberts crossed the plate on Julie Peel's groundout to the Buccaneers second baseman. The Eagles pushed another run across in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Kim Griffin doubled to right centerfield and scored on Tiffany Urena single down the leftfield line. The Buccaneers retook the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the third. Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) singled with one out and Spetar followed with a double. Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) drove in both runners with a single to centerfield. The Buccaneers extended their lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning, when Lane knocked in Spetar with a single down the leftfield line. In the second game, East Tennessee State gained the lead 1-0 in the second inning with three consecutive hits. Tiffany McVay (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) and Sheryl Clark (Bradenton, Fla.) lead off the inning with singles and Rhea Holler (Peoria, Ariz.) followed with a run scoring double. The Eagles answered in the top of the fourth inning with five runs. After loading the bases, Correia came into score on a single by Lindsay Jones. Shanita Black and Griffin each brought two more runs home with singles. A Buccaneer run in the fifth cut the lead to 5-2. After reaching base on single, Spetar scored on a double by Lonsinger. The Buccaneers ended the scoring with another run in the seventh as Lonsinger crossed the plate on a double by McVay. Jones lead the Eagles with four hits and one run batted in on the day, while Lane contributed two hits and three RBI for the Buccaneers. Urena (9-5) took the loss in game one for the Eagles, giving up four runs and seven hits in four and one-third innings. Janice Savage (9-6) earned the win the second game, going six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out six. A.J. Street picked up her first save of the season by working the seventh. The Eagles and the Buccaneers will face off again 1:00 pm tomorrow at Kiwanis Metro Field.
