Saturday, October 05, 2002Johnson City, Tenn. (October 5, 2002) - Appalachian State's Jerry Beard caught a touchdown pass and ran for two more as the Mountaineers defeated East Tennessee State 29-10 in Memorial Center on Saturday night. ETSU found itself in a 20-0 hole at halftime, a deficit the Buccaneers would never recover from. The Mountaineers kept piling on early in the second half when quarterback Joe Burchette hooked up with Jermane Little on a 55-yard touchdown strike. East Tennessee State kicker Jon Godfrey (Johnson City, Tenn.) finally was able to put the Bucs on the scoreboard later in the third with a 30-yard field goal to make it 26-3. Quarterback Jatavis Sanders (Stone Mountain, Ga.) went downfield to All-American wide receiver Cecil Moore (Morristown, Tenn.) for a 68-yard touchdown pass to bring the Bucs within 16. However, ASU wasn't done yet, adding a 32-yard Mark Wright field goal to seal the victory. Beard led all rushers with 90 yards on 13 attempts. Sanders led the Buccaneer running effort, mainly on QB scrambles, scrapping up 66 yards on 16 carries. ETSU only managed 177 yards from scrimmage against a stingy Mountaineer defense. Appalachian State had a total of 17 tackles for loss, amounting to 53 yards. Defensively, the visitors were led by K.T. Stovall who had 2.5 sacks and eight tackles. On the other side of the ball, ASU racked up 373 offensive yards and won the time of possession battle at 30:09, edging ETSU by a mere twenty seconds. The Buccaneers are on the road next week, where they will attempt to get back on the winning track versus the Citadel. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
