Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State had four players score in double figures, but it was not enough to overcome the Wofford attack, as the Lady Terriers downed the Lady Bucs, 74-63 in SoCon action from the Memorial Center Saturday afternoon.
Wofford (5-5, 1-1 SoCon) led 33-30 after an exciting first half that included four lead changes and three ties. The Lady Bucs (1-10, 1-1) held their last lead with 7:14 left in the first stanza following an Erin Thurman jumper. After a Nancy Dubuisson layup at 3:55 remaining put Wofford ahead 28-26, the Lady Terriers would not relinquish the lead again.
Junior forward Megan Jackson scored on a jumper on the Lady Bucs' first possession of the second half to bring ETSU to within one point. That was as close as the Lady Bucs would get as Wofford eventually stretched their lead out to 12 points. ETSU threatened down the stretch, cutting the lead to as little as six with 2:33 remaining in the game. But the Lady Terrier lead grew to double-digits again, stifling ETSU's momentum.
Wofford shot 44 percent from the field for the game as ETSU shot just 32 percent. The Lady Bucs defense played well, forcing the Lady Terriers into 24 turnovers while ETSU committed 17.
Thurman led the Lady Bucs with 13 points. Senior guard Chris Forman contributed 11 points and Jackson added 10. Freshman Jessica Lonon notched the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Wofford was led by senior center Lucy Hines, who notched a career-high 26 points. The senior guard tandem of Jenny Nett (12) and Stacy Parris (15) also scored in double-digits for the Lady Terriers.
This was the Lady Bucs first game of the year at home after playing their first ten games on the road. It brought us together by playing on the road, Coach Kemp said following the game. But it was great being at home.
The Lady Bucs now return to the road to face Chattanooga, Jan. 2 at 5:00 p.m. in the first half of a women's and men's doubleheader between ETSU and Chattanooga. The men's game will immediately follow the women's matchup. The two games will be televised live on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast.
