Johnson City, Tenn.-- East Tennessee State senior middle hitter Jena Policastro paced the Bucs with 12 kills and just two errors on 27 attempts for a .370 hitting percentage as the Buccaneers defeated the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 3-0 in volleyball action Tuesday night from Brooks Gym.
Freshman outside hitter Rachel Shifflet tied Policastro for the team lead in kills with 12 against just four errors. Also having a strong games for the Buccaneers was junior outside hitter Amber Ciskowski who had 10 kills against just three errors and added three service aces. Policastro and freshman setter Jessica Miller led the team with five digs each.
UNC Asheville jumped out to a 10-7 lead midway through the first game, but the Buccaneers fought back to gain the momentum and take the game by a score of 15-11. Midway through the second game, the score was locked at eight until ETSU won seven of the next nine points to win game two, 15-10. In game three, the Bucs roared out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back, winning the third game, 15-2.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman outside hitter Kelly Budnick and sophomore outside hitter Jessica Jones who led UNCA with six kills each. Junior outside hitter Leslie Whitfield had a game-high nine digs for the Bulldogs.
The Buccaneers return to the hardwood Saturday afternoon as Georgia Southern comes to Johnson City. Action from Brooks Gym is set to begin at 2:00.
