Track & field readies for Raleigh Relays
Thursday, March 28, 2013
First appearance at Raleigh Relays since 2006
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 29, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will continue the outdoor season on Friday when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility located on the North Carolina State University campus March 29-30.
Following a pair of top-five finishes between the men’s and women’s teams last weekend at the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic on the Western Carolina University campus, the Buccaneers hope to continue the momentum in Raleigh against a very competitive field. The competition will begin on Friday with the men’s steeplechase at 8:45 a.m., followed by various running events including long-distance, middle-distance and sprint events, as well as many field events. The day’s action will be wrapped up with men’s 10,000m run set to begin at 10:35 p.m. On Saturday, things will kickoff with the women’s 10,000m run at 9:30 a.m., with running and filed events throughout the day. The Raleigh Relays competition will end with the women’s 4x400m relay at 4:45 p.m.
Joining ETSU will be a host of teams from throughout the country, including host North Carolina State, College of Charleston, James Madison, George Mason, Liberty, North Carolina, Samford, South Carolina, Tennessee, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Greensboro, USC Upstate, Belmont, Elon, Virginia Tech, Campbell, Milligan College, Charlotte and Lipscomb, among others.
“The Raleigh Relays will be our greatest challenge up to this point in the season,” said Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “Both the women’s and men’s teams have trained well this week and are ready to achieve personal bests. The quality of the competition should give us ample motivation to elevate our performances”
The Buccaneers will be sending a number of student-athletes to compete in various events. After being out of action last weekend at the Catamount Classic following his record-breaking performance at the Charlotte 49er Classic the week prior, senior Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname) will be back to continue his stellar play in the 100m dash. Alberg is also expected to take part in other sprint events including the men’s 4x100 relay in which the Buccaneers are ranked as first in the A-Sun in the event. Senior Tim O’Dell (Palm Coast, Fla.) will also look to stake his claim as the leader in the conference in the 400m dash.
On the women’s side, ETSU also hopes it can build off of their school record in the 4x100 relay at the 49er Classic and continue their progression in the middle and long-distance events. Sophomore Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) will also hope to prolong her development after setting a school record in the 100m hurdles two weeks ago in Charlotte. A consistent effort in the triple jump from Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has grown to be expected and increased improvement from freshman throwers Tyesha Jones (Nashville, Tenn.) and Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany) will be a great sign for ETSU going forward.
