Buccaneer sprinters turn in strong showings at Florida Relays

Friday, April 02, 2010

GAINESVILLE, Fla. AND LYNCHBURG, Va. (April 2, 2010) - Duronal Monal (Belle Glade, Fla.) led the charge for the Bucs at the Florida Relays on Friday night, as the senior sprinter won his heat in the 100m and tied for fourth overall with an impressive time of 10.30 inside James G. Presley Stadium.

Monal, who is coming off his best indoor season at ETSU, made his outdoor debut in flying fashion on Friday. The Belle Glade, Fla. native enjoyed making the trip to his home state, as his mark should place him in the top-10 among competitors in the NCAA East Region.

Meanwhile, as James sprinted his way to the finish line in the 100m, junior Mike James (Palm Bay, Fla.) also won his heat in the 110m hurdles. James, who is fresh off his record-breaking time in the event last weekend at Western Carolina, finished 16th overall on Friday with a time of 14.44.

Rounding things out for the Bucs on Friday night was junior Jasmine Ingram's (Frederick, Md.) effort in the 400m. Like James, Ingram also set a new facility record in the 400m last weekend in Cullowhee, N.C. (54.50), and on Friday night the Frederick, Md. native ran her second-fastest time in the event - finishing in 55.49.

"I am really pleased with how all three of them performed today," added associate track and field coach Michelle Bynre. "They ran in extremely hot conditions, which are something we haven't faced yet in Johnson City, but each of them handled it well. Despite not being challenged in his heat, I thought Duronal ran exceptionally well. He is coming off his best indoor season at ETSU, and he is now carrying all those positive results with him to the outdoor track. This bodes really well for him as the season progresses. We definitely saw a mark of improvements today, and we look to carry the momentum with us next weekend into the Sea Relays."

While the trio of Buccaneer sprinters were racing in Florida, senior Jordan Briggs (Erwin, Tenn.) and freshman Matt Hill (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) were busy competing in the decathlon up at the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.

After the first-day of the grueling two-day completion Briggs is sitting in eighth (2975 points), while Hill is right behind in ninth (2812).

The ETSU track and field team returns to action on Saturday when a large contingent of athletes competes in day two of the Liberty Invitational.
