Blackburn shatters school record in hammer, Sneed captures first-ever collegiate title

LYNCHBURG, Va. (April 3, 2010) - A pair of throwers led the ETSU track and field team on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Invitational as senior Zachlynn Blackburn (Tazewell, Va.) shattered the school record in the hammer and sophomore Cornell Sneed (Miami, Fla.) captured his first-ever collegiate crown by taking home gold in the discus from the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.

Blackburn finished third in the hammer, but the Tazewell, Va. native set a new program record in the  hammer after recording a toss of 164-05 (50.11m) - shattering her previous best of 159-05 which was set at the 2008 A-Sun Championships.

As Blackburn was setting a school record in the hammer, Sneed was making history in the discus. Sneed, who posted a season-best toss of 152-11 (46.62m) in the event, beat out a field of 19 competitors by over four feet. Chad Lawson from VMI finished second with a distance of 148-04.

Meanwhile, in the jumps a pair of freshman highlighted the Bucs in both the long and triple jumps.

On the women's side, freshman Kelly Monteleone (Verona, Pa.) finished third in the triple and fifth in the long, respectively. Monteleone turned in a leap of 37-05.75 (11.42m) in the tripe, while posting a mark of 17-06.75 (5.35m) in the long.

On the men's side, Jason Johnson (Springfield, Pa.) showcased a third-place effort in the triple jump - finishing with a mark of 45-02.50 (13.78m).

Joining Sneed in the throws was junior Matt Baum's (Middletown, Md.) personal-best effort in the javelin. Baum finished fifth overall with a heave of 177-01 (53.98m).

Rounding things out for the Bucs were Jordan Briggs (Erwin, Tenn.) and Matt Hill (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) in the decathlon. Both athletes were making their season debut in the event and finished a respectable eighth and ninth. Briggs tallied 5554 points and Hill tallied 5153 points.

The ETSU track and field team returns to action next weekend as the Bucs compete in the Sea Relays and the Furman Invitational.
