Monal, Briggs take home final honor for Bucs  

 

MACON, Ga. (May 12, 2010) - The Buccaneer men's track and field team made it a clean sweep in the Atlantic Sun weekly honors as seniors Duronal Monal (Belle Glade, Fla.) and Jordan Briggs (Erwin, Tenn.) were named Athlete of the Week, while freshman long jumper Kelly Monteleone (Verona, Pa.) captured her first career accolade Wednesday afternoon.

 

With ETSU making its final appearance before this weekend's conference championship, Monal took home first-place finishes in the 100m and 200m events Saturday afternoon at the UT Invitational. Monal, who currently boasts the top times in both sprints among conference competitors, recorded a season best mark of 10.26 in the 100m and a lifetime best of 20.75 in the 200m. Unfortunately, the 200m mark wasn't a legal time as there was wind of 4.3 during the race. 

 

Meanwhile, fellow senior (Jordan) Briggs was making his final preparations for the A-Sun Championships - competing in the 110m hurdles, pole vault and long jump last Saturday in Knoxville. Briggs turned in his fastest time this season (15.73) to finish second in the hurdles, and also showcased his best performance in the long jump. The Erwin, Tenn. native blasted his season best in the event and moved his way up the conference performance charts after recording a leap of 21-08.25 (6.61m). Briggs, who entered the day in 13th among conference competitors, now enters the championships in eighth. The senior physical education major capped off the afternoon with a mark of 15-01 (4.60m) in the pole vault to finish third, respectively.

 

On the women's side, (Kelly) Monteleone picked up her first career A-Sun Athlete of the Week honor Wednesday afternoon. The freshman jumper placed fourth in the event Saturday at the UT Invitational and set a season best effort with a mark of 17-08 (5.38m).

 

The Buccaneer track and field team returns to action this weekend when ETSU travels to Jacksonville for the 2010 A-Sun Championships. The two-day meet begins Friday, May 14 at Hodges Stadium, located on the campus of University of North Florida.
