Walker inducted into the U.S. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame
Saturday, December 06, 2003GREENSBORO, N.C. (December 6, 2003) - East Tennessee State University head coach, David E. Walker, was inducted into the United States Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame (USTCA) at the ninth annual USTCA Hall of Fame Luncheon on Saturday afternoon at the Sheraton Five Seasons in Greensboro, N.C. Walker was initially named as an inductee in late October. At the luncheon ceremony, Walker was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the sport of track and field and to the lives of countless men and women throughout the U.S. in his career. Ray Flynn, who ran for Walker from 1974-78, introduced Walker at the luncheon. "I'm one of many who benefited from time spent with Coach Walker and what he has taught me through the years," stated Flynn. "He is a wonderful leader and a role model. He truly deserves the honor of being recognized in the USTCA Hall of Fame. We should all be very proud of him at ETSU." Several athletes, who trained under Walker, attended the event. The list of those in attendance included Louis Kenny, Cronan Gantley, Rick Patterson, Emily Campbell, Derek Murphy, and Mike Feldman a former ETSU track and field team manager. "There are few coaches who have the consistency in their programs and Coach Walker is in it for the long haul," commented ETSU Athletic Director Dave Mullins. "He has produced outstanding champions through his entire career. The respect his former runners have fro him is a direct result of his coaching and influence. Everyone here is a great tribute to him." Walker is in his 40th year at ETSU and has produced 30 All-Americans along with numerous other track and cross country stars in the Ohio Valley and Southern Conferences. Since 1969, Walker's men's teams have won 20 conference championships, finished second seven times and third once. His squads have finished in the top-10 11 times. He has earned some 20 conference coach of the year honors and been named USTCA District Coach of the Year 10 times. "It is a great honor to be inducted into an elite field of legendary coaches and administrators from the track and field community," said Walker at the ceremony. "I still look forward to going to practice and learning something new everyday." Walker was inducted in the USTCA Hall of Fame along with Al Buehler (Duke University), Frank Gagliano (Georgetown University), Bob Larsen (UCLA), Margaret Simmons (Murray State University), and the late Doug Raymond (Kent State University). Walker and the ETSU Track and Field Team look to begin their indoor season when they host the Niswonger Invitational January 24 and 25 in Johnson City, Tenn.
