Saturday, March 27, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. (Mar. 27, 2004) - Junior Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) set a personal best in the 5000 meters of 14:28.15 for an 11th-place finish at the adidas Raleigh relays this weekend in the Paul Derr stadium on the North Carolina State campus. For the women in the distance races, sophomore Christine Ward (Candler, N.C.), also recorded a personal best in the 5000 meters. Her time of 18:32.44 gave her 13th place in the race. The track team had several strong performances with many athletes' continuing to break personal records. In the 800 meter invitational, junior Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished ninth running a personal best of 2:11.76. Freshman Joshua Hicks (Riceville, Tenn.) also improved this weekend tallying a personal best in the 1500 meters. Hicks finished third in the morning race with a time of 4:00.26. In the short sprints, junior Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) recorded a time of 12.26 in the 100 meters which placed her 29th overall. In the field events, senior Kristin Truman (Johnson City, Tenn.) completed an 11.99m jump in the triple jump competition for a 13th-place finish. "We improved upon our performance from last week," commented head coach David E. Walker. "It was a solid outing for the team. We had hoped for a regional qualifying mark in at least one event, but have some areas to improve upon. This meet is good preparation going into next weekend." Next weekend the Buccaneers will continue regular season competition as they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. on April 3 to participate in the Gardner-Webb Duels.
