ATHENS, Ga. (Sept. 13, 2013) – The ETSU’s men’s tennis team opened the fall season Friday, picking up several wins, including sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro’s victory over Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman, who was ranked No. 4 in the 2013 ITA Preseason Men’s Singles Rankings.

Several Buccaneers men’s players won on the opening day of the four-day tournament, but Ribeiro’s win over the nationally-ranked Lipman was one of the most notable victories.

“Beating the No. 4 player in the country to cap the start of singles is a wonderful start,” ETSU head men’s tennis coach Yaser Zaatini said. “It had been a while since any Buccaneers had beaten a highly ranked player such as Lipman. Rogerio played solid from start to finish and managed to close out a match that was never given to him.”

Other ETSU men’s players to find the win column included Joao Gabriel da Silva, Fernando Amon, Conner Huertas del Pino, Rodger Ordeig, David Biosca, Diego Nunez, and Sebastian Yllera.

Ordeig defeated Vanderbilt’s No. 3 singles player from last season, Jeffrey Offerdahl.

“[Rodger] Ordeig looked super solid,” Zaatini said. “His leadership inspired the rest of the team.”

Of the 12 ETSU men’s players to compete, eight came away with wins.

The squad will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of the tournament.

“Tomorrow is a new day,” Zaatini said. “Everything we did today is erased and we start over. Go Bucs!”
