ETSU Tennis to host FGCU and Stetson in conference openers

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 13, 2014) - The ETSU men's and women's tennis teams will begin conference play this weekend, hosting Florida Gulf Coast Friday, March 14, and Stetson Saturday, March 15. Last season, the Bucs combined to go 15-1 in league play with the men's team winning its seventh consecutive Atlantic Sun title.

FULL SLATE

The weekend's schedule will be as followed:

Women:

ETSU (4-7) vs. Florida Gulf Coast (6-4)  - Friday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m.

ETSU vs. Stetson (9-1) - Saturday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m.

Men:

No. 55 ETSU (4-8) vs. Florida Gulf Coast (5-6) - Friday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m.

No. 55 ETSU vs. Stetson (4-5) - Saturday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m.

RIDING HIGH

Both ETSU teams picked up wins over nationally-ranked opponents in their last matches, with the men's team taking down No. 46 Elon Sunday, Feb. 23 and the women's team knocking off No. 62 College of Charleston Monday, March 3.

The ETSU men's squad rose to No. 55 in the latest ITA Rankings. Freshmen David Biosca (Sant Fruitos De Bage, Spain) and Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) are ranked No. 105 and No. 124, respectively, for singles, making ETSU the only A-Sun team to feature multiple ranked players.

After getting wins in both singles and doubles against Charleston, Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) was named Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Player of the Week March 5.

WOMEN'S PRIMER

FGCU will enter the weekend riding a three-match win streak, however just one of the Eagles' five wins have come away from Ft. Myers.

After dropping its opening match of the season at No. 24 Florida State, Stetson has won nine consecutive matches. Senior Diana Bukajeva is 9-1 at No. 1 singles for the Hatters.

MEN'S PRIMER

FGCU began the season 0-4, but have since won five of its last seven matches. Junior Jordi Vives is 10-1 at No. 1 singles this season.

Stetson will enter the weekend coming off a 4-3 win over Appalachian State. The Hatters have not enjoyed a win streak this season, having lost all three of their matches following a win.

10 of ETSU's first 12 matches have come against nationally-ranked opponents. The Bucs picked up road/neutral-site wins over No. 58 Yale, No. 61 Wichita State, and No. 46 Elon.
