Freshman Biosca beats nation's 27th-ranked player at No. 1 singles
WILMINGTON, N.C. (Feb, 23, 2014) - Notching its third win over a ranked opponent this month, the ETSU men's tennis team took down No. 46 Elon in convincing 4-0 fashion Sunday, Feb. 23. In the match, freshman David Biosca (Sant Fruitos De Bage, Spain) got a No. 1 singles win over the nation's 27th-ranked player, Cameron Silverman.
Elon entered Sunday's match with just a single loss—a setback to No. 1 Virginia; however, the Buccaneers (4-8) were not intimidated by their opponent.
"With a win over No. 7 Duke, Elon is a very strong team," ETSU head coach Yaser Zaatini said. "But after the way we played yesterday, I knew we were ready to compete."
Saturday, Feb. 22, ETSU pushed No. 51 UNC-Wilmington to the brink, forcing four singles matches to decisive third sets, but the Bucs' valiant effort fell short. Sunday was a different story.
No. 63 ETSU carried its will to win into its match versus Elon, winning the doubles point in come-from-behind fashion, with Ismael Merino and Diego Nunez taking the No. 1 spot, while Roger Ordeig and Biosca outlasted their opponent at No. 2 doubles.
The battling Bucs continued to put pressure on the Phoenix (4-2), as ETSU took five of the first six sets in singles play.
Ordeig, the lone senior in ETSU's active lineup, gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead by beating Elon's Juan Madrid at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Biosca followed suit at No. 1 singles, upsetting No. 27 Cameron Silveron, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Entering the match, Silverman had been beaten just twice, with both losses coming to Top 50 players.
To put the finishing touches on the Bucs' marquee win, sophomore Sebastian Yllera defeated Stefan Fortmann, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
12 of ETSU's 14 matches this season have come against nationally-ranked teams, with the Bucs earning victories over No. 58 Yale, No. 61 Wichita State, and No. 46 Elon.
The Bucs' win over Elon marks the conclusion of the team's 12-match, season-opening road swing. ETSU will take on Appalachian State in the Bucs' home opener, Tuesday, March 4 at 2:00 p.m.
