Bucs heading to Nashville
INDIANAPOLIS (April 30, 2013) – The NCAA revealed its 2013 NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament field of 64 on Tuesday evening, and ETSU learned it is heading to Nashville, Tenn., for a First Round matchup against host and No. 16 overall seed Vanderbilt.
ETSU (13-6, 7-1 A-Sun) and Vanderbilt (16-10, 6-6 SEC) square off Friday, May 10, from VU’s Currey Tennis Center. The Bucs are the No. 4 seed in the region and Vandy is the No. 1. The other two teams competing at the site, along with their regional seeding, are No. 2 Illinois and No. 3 Georgia State. The two winners play Saturday, May 11, in Nashville. Times have not yet been announced.
“We love the fact that we’re here [in the tournament] and that we’ve been here for the last seven years,” said Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini following the selection show, which the Buccaneers watched from the Carnegie Hotel alongside friends, family and members of the media. “The guys are extremely excited.
“Vanderbilt is a tough team. They won a round in the SEC Tournament, and anytime you go up against a team that has done that, you have your hands full. Our guys feel they have a fighting chance, and when you have that, anything can happen.”
ETSU makes its seventh consecutive trip and 11th overall to the NCAA Tournament. Zaatini has led ETSU to nine of those appearances with his first as head coach coming in 2004. The Buccaneers have two wins in NCAA Tournament history, defeating Alabama in 2010 and Notre Dame in 2008.
Vanderbilt will be making its fourth consecutive trip to the big dance and 12th overall. The Commodores are 13-11 all-time in the Tournament, losing to Notre Dame in the first round last year. They are led by Ryan Lipman, who is currently ranked No. 13 in the ITA singles rankings with an overall record of 28-10. Sophomore Gonzales Austin is ranked No. 47.
The winner of the Nashville Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Urbana, Ill., hosted by the University of Illinois, from May 16-27.
