No. 74 men hoping to clinch bye, women on the verge of perfection
MACON, Ga. and KENNESAW, Ga. (April 11, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s tennis teams make the trip to Georgia for a pair of Atlantic Sun matches this weekend, concluding their regular seasons against Mercer and Kennesaw State.
Friday, the No. 74 ETSU men (9-6, 5-1 A-Sun) and women (11-5, 6-0 A-Sun) each take on Mercer at 2 p.m., from the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. The regular season ends for each side on Saturday at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center, with the Bucs facing Kennesaw State at 10 a.m., before the Lady Bucs take their turn against the Owls at 2 p.m.
ETSU’s men’s side rides a four-match winning streak, earning 7-0 victories in its last three outings against NKU, Lipscomb and FGCU. The win to begin the streak came at Stetson, 6-1.
Entering the weekend, the Buccaneers are second in the A-Sun standings behind No. 63 North Florida, who handed ETSU its lone A-Sun loss to being the conference season, 4-3. Should the Buccaneers defeat both Georgia schools this weekend, they will clinch the No. 2 seed in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship.
Sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) is the Bucs’ statistical leader at 25-11 overall, 10-4 dual and 6-0 in A-Sun play. All 14 of Ribeiro’s spring contests have come in the No. 2 hole and he carries a seven-match winning streak. Senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) is 17-11 overall, 11-3 dual and 5-1 in A-Sun play, carrying a five-match winning streak into the weekend.
The Lady Buccaneers are staring down the A-Sun Championship’s top seed and will finish the conference season a perfect 8-0 with a pair of weekend victories. Last year’s A-Sun runner-up has dominated in 2013, with its closest decision coming in a 5-2 victory against Florida Gulf Coast.
The ETSU women saw a seven-match winning streak come to an end on Sunday in Charlottesville, Va., losing to No. 17 Virginia, 4-1.
Freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) is chasing history. At 28-7 overall, 15-1 dual and 6-0 in A-Sun play, Choo is just four wins shy of tying Sandie Knight for ETSU’s single-season wins record. Knight posted a mark of 32-9 in 2006.
Choo and classmate Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) jumped into the ITA’s national doubles rankings on Tuesday at No. 71. The duo is 22-8 overall, 12-2 dual and 6-0 in conference play with a 1-1 record against nationally ranked opponents.
Full recaps of each match will be posted to ETSUBucs.com.
