Zaatini sends Bandres, Ramirez, Varon, Ordeig

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2012) – The ETSU men’s tennis team heads to The Racquet Club of Memphis this weekend, looking to take down the competition at the 2012 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships.

Hosted by the University of Memphis, the tournament begins Friday and concludes with championship finals on Tuesday. In total, 21 collegiate teams will be represented, including Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and ETSU. Those schools combine to make up a 96-man singles draw and a 48-team doubles bracket.

Representing ETSU at the regional tournament will be seniors Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay), as well as juniors Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) and Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain). All four will battle for both the singles and doubles championships. Ramirez and Varon make up one doubles team, while Bandres and Ordeig comprise the other.

In singles play, Ramirez and Bandres earn a first-round bye and begin play Saturday morning. Varon and Ordeig play in Friday’s opening round. Varon takes on Kentucky’s Beck Pennignton and Ordeig battles Louisville’s Alex Gornet. The duo of Bandres and Ordeig automatically advance to the doubles round of 32, while Ramirez and Varon play in the opening round against Murray State’s Max and Aleks Mitric.

Fans can track ETSU’s progress with daily recaps, which will be available at the end of each day on ETSUBucs.com.
