Pabon, Varon win back draw finals to wrap up UVA Fall Classic

Sunday, October 07, 2012

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Oct. 7, 2012) – The ETSU men’s tennis team finished up the UVA Fall Classic by winning two back draw finals on Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center.

Sophomore Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) took on Coastal Carolina’s Sam Barr, winning a first-set tiebreak and defeating the Chanticleer in straights 7-6, 6-1 in the Blue Flight, while fellow classmate Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) took down James Madison’s Maxi Branth by the same score in the back draw final of the Gold Flight. Senior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) also won on Sunday, defeating Virginia Tech’s Trpimir Kujundzic in the Red Flight’s 5th place match 7-5, 6-3.

Those wins were a bit of a consolation for ETSU, as the two Buccaneers competing in main draw finals were defeated by opponents from VCU. Junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) fell to Michal Voscek 6-2, 6-3 in the White Flight, and senior Jesus Bandres lost to Claes Garrison in a third-set match tiebreak 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4).

Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil), did not compete in the 3rd place game following his injury from Saturday.

“I thought the guys gave it their best effort,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “They’re doing all that’s asked of them, and that’s really good to see. We really don’t have that much depth, but hopefully we can fix that before the spring season.”

The Buccaneers take next weekend off before heading to Memphis, Tenn. for the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships beginning Friday, Oct. 19.
