ETSU to play No. 57 North Carolina State in Saturday’s consolation

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 27, 2012) – The No. 58 ETSU men’s tennis team opened the spring season in Lexington, Ky. as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, but stumbled out of the gates in a 4-1 loss to No. 22 Tulsa at Kentucky's Boone Tennis Complex.

“Overall, I wouldn’t say it was a mediocre effort, but it just seemed like we didn’t take advantage of chances,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “The highlight of our day was Jeremy [Bonnevalle] stepping up and winning convincingly in a couple sets.

“In doubles, [Tulsa] was a superior team. We hung in and won a few games at No. 2 and had our chances. We came back in a difficult game but let a couple of easy points get away, and they wound up breaking us. They pretty much ran away with it.”

Tulsa (1-3) opened up with a quick victory at the No. 3 doubles, as Alejandro Sanchez and Lucian Gheorghe def. Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) and Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) 8-1. The No. 3 ITA ranked duo of Clifford Marsland and Ashley Watling then defeated Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) and Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) 8-5 to win the Golden Hurricane the doubles point.

Things didn’t improve much for ETSU (0-1) in singles, although Bonnevalle got the Bucs on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lucian Gheorghe. Following that result, Gille fell to Marsland 6-3, 6-1, No. 83 Watling def. Bandres 6-3, 6-4, and No. 88 Grant Ive def. Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) 6-4, 6-2.

“I’m not particularly the most optimistic person overall, but we’re better than that,” Zaatini added.

The Bucs continue the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Lexington, when they take on No. 57 North Carolina State in the consolation match on Saturday at 10 a.m. Live stats will be available courtesy of UKathletics.com.
