MACON, Ga. (April 12, 2011) - With the Atlantic Sun Tournament quickly approaching, the ETSU men's tennis team got good news as four players were named to the A-Sun All-Conference teams, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia), junior Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium), and sophomore Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) earned First-Team All-Atlantic Sun honors, while freshman Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) earned Second-Team and All-Freshman honors.
Teraz earned his second straight all-conference honor after picking up 14 singles wins on the year, which included a solid 5-2 mark at the No. 1 position. Teraz, who has been ranked as high as No. 93, defeated Jean Anderson of Texas at the fall D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships, while also defeating Robert Hall of Louisville at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional.
Gille, the 2009-10 A-Sun Player of the Year and this season's A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year, battled a bout with Mononucleosis during the season to finish the spring with a 10-7 record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. In addition, Gille finished the spring with an impressive 15-5 mark in doubles play with teammate Bandres. The duo finished with an 8-1 record in A-Sun play, while also earning victories in their last 11 matches.
Bandres led the team with 21 singles victories during the season, including 12 during spring play and an 8-1 mark in A-Sun contests. Bandres earned a No. 73 ranking after a successful fall tournament season. He was named A-Sun Player of the Week twice during the season.
In his first season with the Bucs, Ordeig finished the spring with an impressive 9-2 singles record, including an 8-1 mark in league play. Ordeig played mostly in the No. 6 position for the Bucs, but also earned victories at the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 positions.
Campbell's Davy Sum concluded his senior season in impressive fashion with a 20-0 No. 1 singles mark including a 10-0 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play. Sum's efforts earned him unanimous honors as the A-Sun Men's Tennis Player of the Year and his fourth-straight first team honor.
Fernando Guillen became the Camels' second student-athlete to win Freshman of the Year after finishing the season 15-5 and 5-3 at No. 3 singles in league play. Guillen joins Sum, who claimed the same honor in 2008.
UNF head coach Igal Buberman earned the A-Sun Coach of the Year honor after leading the Ospreys to a share of the A-Sun title.
ETSU is the No. 2 seed at this week's Atlantic Sun Tournament in DeLand, Fla. The Bucs will play the winner of the Campbell-Lipscomb match on Friday in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m.
