Men's tennis falls at #13 Louisville, 7-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 23, 2011) - The No. 51 ranked ETSU men's tennis team fell to No. 13 Louisville on Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.


The Cards opened the match by winning a very entertaining and competitive doubles point to get out to the early 1-0 lead. Louisville gained the early advantage in doubles after the duo of Alejandro Calligari and Amaury Derognat defeated Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) 8-4 at number three. However, The ETSU team of Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) and Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) picked up an 8-6 win over Simon Childs and Sumit Gupta at the number two position to even the doubles matches.

The point came down to a battle on court one as Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk pulled out a 9-8 victory over Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia) and Charles Bottoni (Bois Guillaume, France) to clinch the doubles point.

Louisville swept the single points in straight sets for the third consecutive match. At the two-spot, Maksimcuk, No. 75 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated No. 73 Bandres 6-3, 6-3 to pull the Cards ahead 2-0. Andrew Carter added to the lead with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Juan Ramirez at No. 5. Eighth-ranked Austen Childs beat Gille 6-1, 6-4 at the top seed to clinch the win.

Calligari topped Bottoni 7-6, 6-0 at No. 4 and Dante Terenzio closed the match with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Akser at the six-spot.

Louisville improves to 3-0 on the season, while ETSU falls to 0-2.

The Bucs will travel to Charlottesville, Va. next weekend for the ITA Kickoff Weekend, hosted by No. 1 Virginia. ETSU will take on No. 50 Binghamton on Friday at 2 p.m. Then, they will take on the nation's top team Virginia or No. 65 Cornell on Saturday.
