BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Oct. 24, 2009) - Led by junior Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia), the ETSU men's tennis team continued its great showing Saturday at the tough Wilson ITA Ohio Valley Regional inside the Varsity Tennis Center at Indiana University.
Teraz, a 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Second-team member, picked up two wins on the day. During the morning session Teraz made quick work of Eastern Kentucky Alex Das Izquierdo 6-2, 6-1, while later in the afternoon the Mojstrana, Slovenia native showed his toughness with an outstanding 7-5, 7-5 Round of 16 win over Vanderbilt senior Vijay Paul. With his two victories Saturday, Teraz now sits with 7-1 mark this season, including two wins over No. 8 ranked Tennessee - No. 20 Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago -- players and a victory over Peter Frank of No. 38 ranked South Florida.
"Really what can you say other than Grega is playing outstanding right now," said head coach Yaser Zaatini. "He's played extremely solid in this tournament and really has all fall. The confidence and willpower Grega is showing is something that I'm truly proud of. He's always had great ability and talent and now he simply believes that he's going to perform at that top level everytime he takes the court."
Also in action for the Bucs Saturday was senior Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Colombia), who picked up a remarkable three set win over No. 62 ranked and fifth seed Viktor Maksimcuk of Louisville 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (5). Unfortunately, for the Buc captain Isaza's run would come to end after falling to Fago of Tennesse 6-1, 6-3.
Also picking up one-on-one wins was freshman Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela), who defeated Davey Sandgren of the Vols in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (3), before falling just short of the quarterfinals with a loss to Kentucky's No. 70th ranked Eric Quigley 6-2, 6-1.
Rounding out the singles scores for the Bucs was junior Charles Bottoni (Bois Guillaume, France), and sophomore Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium). Bottoni fell in a long-close contest to Victor Malo of in-state rival MTSU. The second-year Buc earned the first set 6-3, before Malo stromed back to take the final two sets 6-4, 6-2. Gille, fell to EKU's Alex Das in another long three-set match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
"Again today our guys continued to fight hard every match," said head coach Zaatini. "Sander and Charley (Charles) both fought hard and had a chance to win, but both of them ran out of gas a little at the end. Danny played great against a sturdy opponent in Maksimcuk. To comeback from being down 3-0 in the final set and win, showed true determination. Then if you look at Jesus, who comes into his first regional as a freshman and beats a senior in Sandgren, it just shows the confidence he's playing with."
In doubles action ETSU's two highlights came as Gille and Bandres defeated Purdue's No. 1 squad and ninth seeded team of Bijelica and Rose, 9-8 (2), while Bottoni and Teraz advanced to Sunday's Round of 8 with a pair of victories. The ETSU junior team earned wins over Tennessee's Fago and Brewer 8-5, before advancing past MTSU's Peers and Malo.
