Men's tennis at the Southern Intercollegiate; day two updates

ATHENS, Ga. (September 20, 2008) - Here are quick updates from the 41st annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, being played, Friday through Monday, in Athens, Ga.

 

Senior Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Ryan Smith of Georgia Tech, 6-1,6-3 before dropping Josh Varela of host Georgia, 6-4,7-5 in the Round of 16. With both wins Olivares advances to Sunday's quarterfinals against Joey Burckhardt of Florida.

 

Also in the Round of 32 newcomer Charles Bottoni (Bois Guilaume, France) dropped his match to fifth seeded Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech, 6-1, 7-6.

 

In the consolation bracket, sophomore Matej Zlatkovic opened his day by defeating Jerry Sundrgen of Morehead State. Now Zlatkovic will open second round play against Mickael Boyer of the College of Charleston. Also on the consolation side South Florida's Wael Kilani defeated ETSU junior Grega Teraz 6-3, 6-2.

 

In the Division II bracket ETSU opened day-two as senior Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) dropped his Round of 32 match against Virginia Tech's Patrick Daciek, 6-3,7-4. ETSU teammate Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium), advanced to the Round of 16 by defeating Miguel Mugaruza of Georgia Tech, 5-7,7-5,6-4. However, after playing to a three-set win the round before, Gille dropped his next match to Wake Forest's Jon Wolff 6-0,6-0.

 

The final Buc on the Division II bracket side is sophomore Sergio Velez (Medline, Columbia), who dropped his Round of 32 match against Duke's Luke Marchese, 6-3,6-2.

 

In doubles action the ETSU team of Bottoni and Teraz defeated Damien Cordesse and Michael Fedoseyev of Lander College 8-5. Unfortunately, Bottoni and Teraz dropped their Round of 16 doubles match to Chris Doerr and Tanner Stump of Mississippi State 8-6.

 

Also in pair's competition the ETSU tandem of Olivares and Ahlgren defeated Duke's Dylan Arnold and Torstein Wietoska, 8-3.
