Bucs tennis cruises past North Florida, 7-0

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (February 25, 2007) - The No. 42 ETSU men's tennis team earned their third straight win against an Atlantic Sun conference team this season defeating North Florida 7-0. The Bucs improve to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Ospreys fall to 4-6, 3-1.

 

The Bucs took the early lead as they swept all three doubles matches. Travis Sandlant (Werribee, Australia) and Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) defeated Ben Smith and Matias Sigal, 8-1 in the No. 1 position. Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) defeated Leonardo Gomes and Javier Ferrin, 8-2 in the No. 2 position, while Felix Insaurralde (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) defeated Eduardo Pereira and Elad Gabay, 8-4 in the No. 3 position.

 

Leading the Bucs in the No. 1 singles position, Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) defeated Matias Sigal, 7-6, 6-1, while Olivares defeated Pereira 7-6, 6-2 in the second position. Insaurralde overcame Smith, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 position while Serrano defeated Ferrin, 6-4, 7-6. Picardo eased by Gabay in the No. 5 position 6-1, 6-3 and Ahlgren won his match 6-4, 6-0 against Gomes in the sixth position.

 

"We played extremely solid today. Everybody played to their potential," said head coach Yaser Zaatini. "There was a lot of intensity in the way everyone played and you could really see the respect for the other team. They fought hard and everyone wanted to win their spot. It was just a solid effort overall."

 

The Bucs will travel to San Antonio, Texas where they will face the San Francisco Dons on March 4 at noon and the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners on March 5 at 2 p.m. For all ETSU men's tennis action visit www.etsubucs.com.
