ETSU men's tennis defeats Jacksonville, 4-0; advances to semifinals

MACON, Ga. (April 13, 2006) - The ETSU men's tennis team defeated Jacksonville, 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic-Sun conference tournament. The Bucs are now 19-6 on the year and will be advancing to the semifinals where they will take on Belmont.

 

In doubles action, the Bucs came out strong as they clenched the doubles point in the No. 2 and 3 positions. Felix Insaurralde (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Lisandro Picardo (Mar Del Plata, Argentina) defeated Cory Garrett and Tim Newman, 8-0 while Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) defeated Matt Kampfe and Tyler Thomas, 8-0. The No. 1 doubles match was called when the Bucs clenched the point.

 

ETSU again dominated the Dolphins in singles action, with wins coming in the No. 3, 4, and 5 positions. Conference tournament play is suspended when one team has clenched the match. In No. 3 singles, Juan Crosa (Asuncion, Paraguay) defeated Cory Garrett, 6-0, 6-0 and Enrique Olivares defeated Tim Newman, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Sebastian Serrano then completed the sweep for the Bucs as he defeated Matt Kampfe, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 position.

 

"It was a great start for the team, just to be able to get a match under our belts, hopefully that will serve as a small preparation for our match tomorrow," said head coach Yaser Zaatini.

 

The Bucs will face the Belmont Bruins tomorrow at 10 a.m. ETSU defeated Belmont, 6-1 on March 18 in Nashville.
