Bucs Advance Five in Singles to Second Round in First Day of USC Fall Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 17, 2003) - The East Tennessee State men's tennis team advanced five of it's singles players to the second round of competition at the USC Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C. Friday. Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) was the only ETSU singles player seeded in the tournament at the number three slot of the singles A bracket. He defeated Bastain Moldehke from the College of Charleston 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to move onto the second day to face Wake Forest's Brett Ross. Also competing in the singles A bracket was Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela), who defeated fourth seed Marcus Westman from USC 7-5, 6-1 to advance. Moises Serrano ( Bucaramanga, Columbia), Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina), and Frederico Ochoa (Manizales, Columbia) also won their first rounds to move into the round of 16 in their respective brackets. In doubles action, both pairs were eliminated in the first day by pairs from Wake Forest. The second seeded team of Posada and Salazar was defeated by the sixth seeded pair of Andrew Hamar and Todd Paul, 8-4. ETSU's pair of Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Serrano won their first round 8-2 against USC's Rob Cassidy and Jason McAlhaney, but were defeated by Wake Forest's Joe Bates and Liren Strauss, 8-5.
