No. 74 Men's Tennis Falls to No. 66 Furman, 7-0

Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 10, 2002) -- The No. 74-ranked East Tennessee State men's tennis team fell to No. 66 Furman, 7-0, in a highly contested Southern Conference match Wednesday afternoon from the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. Furman won the doubles point after taking two of the three matches. The ETSU team of junior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and senior Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mexico) defeated Furman's No. 22-ranked tandem of John Chesworth and James Cameron, 9-8. Junior Pablo Sahagun (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and sophomore Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Mexico) of ETSU fell to Paladins Peter Netzler and Andrew Rogers at No. 2 doubles, also by a 9-8 score. ETSU sophomores Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) were defeated by Chris Henderson and Allen Simmons of Furman at No. 3 doubles, 8-1. The tight matches continued, but the Paladins swept all six singles matches. At No. 1 singles, ETSU's Pavlovich fell to Furman's Chesworth, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Buccaneer Fernandez was defeated by Paladin Cameron at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, ETSU's Iglesias fell to Furman's Henderson, 6-1, 6-2. ETSU's Sahagun fell to Patrick Gaughan of the Paladins at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 5 singles Salazar fell to Furman's Patrick Fillnow, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Serrano of ETSU was defeated at No. 6 singles, as he fell to Ryan McCarthy of Furman, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. ETSU's record falls to 12-7, 7-1 in Southern Conference play. Furman runs their record to 10-12, 7-0 in SoCon matches. "Furman played very well today," said ETSU head coach Dave Mullins following the match. "We battled, but we lost a lot of tight matches. They won some close ones and that got them momentum as a team. We just have to regroup and get ready to face College of Charleston on Friday." The Buccaneers return to action on Friday at 1 p.m. as they face College of Charleston from Charleston, S.C. Singles matches: No. 1: John Chesworth (Furman) def.
