Roberto Fernandez Named Southern Conference Tennis Player of the Week

Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 10, 2002) -- East Tennessee State senior captain Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mexico) was named Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday morning from Asheville, N.C. Fernandez shared player of the week honors with Chris Henderson of Furman. Fernandez went 3-0 at No. 2 singles in conference action, leading the Bucs to three SoCon wins. He defeated Appalachian State's Doug Ormsby 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles on April 2 before topping Wofford's Brett Johnson 6-2, 6-1 on April 5. Fernandez finished the week with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mark Finnegan from Georgia Southern on April 6. Fernandez also teamed with junior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) at No. 1 doubles to win all three matches last week. The No. 74-ranked Buccaneers return to action on Friday at 1 p.m. as they face College of Charleston from Charleston, S.C.
