Third career honors
MACON, Ga. (Feb. 27, 2013) – ETSU senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) defeated the ITA’s 21st-ranked singles player, Nathan Pasha of Georgia, on Monday and was rewarded by being named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Bandres took on Pasha at No. 1 singles, defeating the nationally ranked Bulldog, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 1-0 (12-10). The loss was just the second Pasha has suffered to an unranked opponent on the entire 2012-13 campaign, but No. 8 Georiga found a way to escape ETSU, 5-2.
The win moved Bandres’ overall record to 11-10 and 5-2 in dual play. Bandres is 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents this year, having also defeated then-No. 75 Victor Valente of Georgia State earlier this month.
The weekly award is the third of Bandres’ collegiate career. The Buccaneers have received two A-Sun honors this season, with Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) earning the others the week of Jan. 30.
No. 60 ETSU (4-4) opens conference play Friday, heading to Spartanburg, S.C., for a 1 p.m., showdown against USC Upstate.
