Bucs welcome in No. 60 Georgia State and Nebraska
BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2013) – The 74th-ranked ETSU men’s tennis team plays its first pair of home matches this weekend, heading to the Bristol Racquet Club to take on No. 60 Georgia State and Nebraska.
ETSU (3-2) begins the home schedule Friday at 11:30 a.m., when it takes on Panthers of Georgia State (6-1). Saturday, the Bucs play a late afternoon contest with Nebraska (3-3), scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
The Buccaneers have managed to stay above .500 despite a tough non-conference schedule. Three of ETSU’s five matches have come against nationally ranked opponents, where it holds a 1-2 record. The win came during the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, downing then-No. 71 UL-Lafayette, 4-2, while the two defeats came at the hands of No. 4 Ohio State and a Wake Forest team that has climbed to No. 36 in the latest ITA poll.
Oklahoma State and Appalachian State represent ETSU’s two other victories. The Bucs downed the Cowboys, 4-2, to chalk up their first win of the year, while the win against ASU came two weeks ago, 6-1, in Boone, N.C.
Senior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) continue to be the keys to victory. Both Ramirez and Ordeig have won their singles matches in each of ETSU’s trio of wins and each Buccaneer’s dual record reflects that of the team.
At the top of the win column is sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who stands at 17-9 overall with a 2-2 dual mark. Ribeiro had an impressive freshman campaign where he went 21-9, 12-2 dual, on his way to being named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team.
Georgia State heads to Bristol on a four-match winning streak that began by defeating No. 62 North Florida in the ITA Kick-Off at the Charlottesville, Va., site. GSU has since defeated Samford, Georgia Southern and Nicholls State, respectively.
Nebraska looks to build on its short streak of two consecutive wins. The Cornhuskers impressively downed No. 30 VCU last weekend, 4-3, and followed that up with a decisive result over Creighton, 6-1.
ETSU squared off with both Georgia State and Nebraska on the road in its 2012 campaign and fell to each. GSU earned a 5-2 win, while the then-38th ranked Cornhuskers narrowly escaped with a, 4-3, decision in Omaha.
