CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Sept. 24, 2010) - The ETSU men's tennis team got off to a solid start at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational with three players advancing to quarterfinal action Friday afternoon from the Snyder Tennis Center.
In Charlottesville, Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela ) continues his solid fall play as he defeated Fred Saba of Duke, 6-2, 7-6 (3), in the A-1 singles draw. Bandres will take on Maros Horny of Maryland tomorrow at 12 p.m. Bandres is now 6-3 on the season.
Freshman Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) won a tight three set battle against Tobias Fanselow of Old Dominion 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the opening round of A-2 singles. Fanselow is the No. 117 ranked player in the country. Varon will take on No. 41 Chris Nott of Arkansas tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. Varon has now won a team-leading seven matches during fall play and is 7-2 overall.
In the A-4 bracket, the Bucs got a victory from Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) as he knocked off Taylor Meyer of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-2. Bonnevalle will take on Justin Shane of Virginia tomorrow at 1:30 p.m at the Snyder Tennis Center.
Play continues on Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The final round of doubles begins at 8:30 a.m., with two rounds of singles to follow.
At the Southern Intercollegiate the Bucs had a tough opening day. Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) dropped a hard fought match to Christian Blocker of Miami in the opening round of Division I singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Fellow teammate Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) also fell in opening round action. He was defeated by Michael Alford of Florida, 6-3, 6-1.
The biggest positive from the day came from Akser and Ramirez as they teamed up for doubles play. The duo started the day off by defeating Malte Stropp and Zach White of Mississippi State, 9-7. Then, the duo knocked off Gabriel Flores and Omar Aly of Miami, 8-5. Akser/Ramirez will take on the top-seeded team of Juan Spir/Kevin King of Georgia Tech tomorrow evening.
ETSU freshman Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) was defeated by Eric Turner of Mississippi State, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Southern Intercollegiate will continue tomorrow with both singles and doubles play.
