JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 19, 2013) – A 500-mile bus ride and 90 minutes of quality soccer earned the ETSU men’s soccer team its fourth conference win of the season, along with sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Sun standings.
The Buccaneers (6-4-3, 4-1-0) can make the long return trip to Johnson City in lighter spirits after securing their fourth win in five tries with a 2-1 victory over Jacksonville Saturday night.
ETSU recorded just two shots in the first half, but sophomore defender Kristoffer Ibsen’s (Aalborg, Denmark) 13th-minute goal allowed the Bucs to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Bucs’ offense fared better in the second half, with ETSU outshooting Jacksonville, 12-5, in the last 45 minutes of play.
Junior forward Anthony Wojas (Auxerre, France) added an insurance goal in the 65th minute off an assist from Donte Brangman (Southampton, Bermuda) to extend ETSU’s lead to 2-0.
Wojas’ goal would go on to be a crucial one, as Jacksonville’s Nathan Dalton put the Dolphins (4-7-1, 2-2-0) in the scoring column with a 70th-minute goal.
ETSU senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) was just 20 minutes from making A-Sun history. With one more shutout, Coulter will become the conference’s all-time leader for career shutouts. He is currently tied with Florida International University’s Jeff Cassar (1992-95) with 23 clean sheets.
With the win, ETSU broke its second-place tie with Lipscomb, which suffered a 2-1 setback at home to Northern Kentucky Friday night.
ETSU will look to extend its win streak to three matches when it visits Northern Kentucky Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The Bucs will take on the Norse (5-3-5, 2-1-1) at 7:00 p.m. inside NKU Soccer Stadium.
