Monday, September 03, 2012
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 3, 2012) – Below are the ETSU athletic events for the week of September 3-9.
Men’s Soccer (3-1-0)
This week: After playing three matches last week, the Bucs will only be in action once this week as the Blue and Gold host Radford on Saturday evening at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on A-Sun.TV, while live stats will be available on ETSUBucs.com.
Last week: ETSU rebounded from its season-opening loss at Appalachian State by picking up three straight wins, starting with an impressive 3-1 victory over UNC Greensboro on Tuesday night and finishing the weekend with a 1-0 double overtime win versus No. 17 UAB inside Summers-Taylor Stadium. Sandwiched in between those two key victories was a 1-0 win at Presbyterian, courtesy of Emmanuel Wilson’s (Memphis, Tenn.) first collegiate goal with 4:47 remaining in the game. Junior David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) enjoyed an outstanding week after netting the first two goals in the 3-1 win over Greensboro, while it was his golden goal with a little over two minutes left in the final overtime that lifted the Blue and Gold to their first-ever win over a ranked opponent inside Summers-Taylor Stadium on Sunday. Redshirt goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) earned all three wins in the box, while registering consecutive shutouts to end the weekend.
Women’s Soccer (4-1-0)
This week: The Lady Bucs return to the pitch for two home matches this weekend at Summers-Taylor Stadium. ETSU begins the week with a Friday night game against Western Carolina at 7 p.m., while wrapping up its final non-conference home match with Winthrop at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Free live video will be offered for the Western Carolina match on A-Sun.TV, while live stats will also be offered for both games through ETSUBucs.com. The Lady Bucs are 9-0-1 in their last 10 home matches dating back to last season.
Last Week: ETSU had its four-game winning streak snapped after suffering a 7-1 setback at Middle Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon in Murfreesboro. Junior Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) scored the lone goal for the Lady Bucs, marking her fourth straight match with a goal and her conference-leading fifth goal of the season.
This week: After playing their first eight games away from Johnson City to start the season, the Buccaneer volleyball team returns home for the first time in 2012 when ETSU hosts Marshall on Monday night inside Brooks Gym. Game time is set for 7 p.m., while a free cookout will be provided at 5:45 p.m. Free live video will be offered for the Marshall match on A-Sun.TV and live stats will also be available on ETSUBucs.com. The Bucs will then play in their third and final tournament this weekend when the Blue and Gold head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Hampton Inn Bama Bash. ETSU faces Alabama State (10 a.m.) and Austin Peay (3 p.m.) on Friday, while closing out play with Lamar (3 p.m.) and Alabama (8 p.m.) on Saturday. Alabama will be running live stats for the entire tournament.
Last week: The Bucs continued their strong start to the season by taking two of the three matches played at the Clemson Classic. ETSU began the tournament with a sweep over Chattanooga on Friday afternoon and defeated Charlotte in four sets Saturday to set up a championship matchup with the host Tigers. Unfortunately, the Bucs – who were in contention during the first two sets – were swept by Clemson as the Tigers went on to win the crown. Sophomores Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Bethany Gesell (High Point, N.C.) were selected to the Clemson Classic All-Tournament Team. Hardy continued her streak of recording a block in 34 consecutive matches over the weekend after finishing the Clemson Classic with 30 kills and 14 total blocks in 10 sets played. Gesell was clutch with her hitting as she generated a .528 attack percentage in the first two matches on the weekend. The High Point, N.C. native collected 21 kills on 36 attempts with only two errors against Chattanooga and Charlotte.
This week: Idle
Last week: The ETSU men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2012 season with a solid showing at the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C. on Friday evening. The ETSU women’s team finished in fourth-place overall (107) with the help of junior Chelsea Clark (Fairmont, W. Va.) and freshmen Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.). Clark crossed the finish line in 19:21.7, good for 13th and was quickly followed by newcomer Hirko with a time of 19:22.1. On the men’s side, the Bucs took fifth-place and were led by sophomore Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) who finished 15th with a time of 26:02.1, but ran 36 seconds faster than last year’s opening meet.
