Sophomore keeper records two clean sheets in Bucs’ 1-0-1 week

MACON, Ga. (September 26, 2011) – Posting two shutouts and leading ETSU to its first four-game unbeaten streak of the season, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) has been named Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

The Bucs had two difficult games this past week after breaking back into Soccer America’s top-25, and they needed every ounce of effort Coulter put forth to come out 1-0-1. The sophomore transfer from the University of San Diego combined for nine saves in 200 minutes of play, while posting his conference-leading fifth and sixth shutouts of the year.

With his exceptional week, Coulter continues to lead the A-Sun in four statistical categories; shutouts (6), shutouts per game (0.75), save percentage (.857) and goals against average (0.71). Coulter’s remarkable save percentage and goals against average also ranks him 16th and 31st, respectively, in the NCAA.

On Tuesday, the Buccaneers hosted a hot Virginia Tech team that had won three of its last four games, including a victory of then-No. 1 North Carolina, while averaging just under two goals per contest. The Bucs managed just one goal in the match, but Coulter stepped up for ETSU. The Irish native made two saves off 10 shots faced to keep the Hokies off the scoreboard and notch the Bucs’ sixth victory of the season.

Newly ranked No. 25/23 Furman marched into Summers-Taylor Stadium on Sunday afternoon as winners of seven in a row. Through its seven-game winning streak, the Paladins averaged a startling 2.29 goals per game, but Coulter, again, was a match for Furman’s attack. He made seven saves through a full 110 minutes of action to record his sixth shutout.

Coulter has now received A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honors twice this season, with his other selection coming the week of September 6.
